ITC Level 3 Award in Learning Beyond the Classroom

Review:

The Learning Beyond the Classroom qualification has undergone an extensive review and update. 

The main purpose of updating the Learning Beyond the Classroom qualification was to make it fit for purpose and future-proof, reflecting current industry practices and broader outdoor education principles, while also empowering educators to teach outside the traditional classroom

The Outputs of the review:  

The outputs also focused on futureproofing the qualification. 

The outputs reflect experience and knowledge gained over the last 5 years of LBtC  practice.

Specifically the review outcomes:

Unit Learning Outcomes reordered, assessment criteria expanded. Command/action verbs updated for greater accuracy, LOs updated to mirror industry practice. 

Rationale:

The qualification is intended to provide the learner with an understanding of the benefits of learning beyond the classroom, how to manage groups and facilitate their learning and to practically deliver activity beyond the classroom environment.

Developed with input from the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) and Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) and support from influential leaders within education, it aims to break down boundaries, empower educators and allow educators to give themselves and their employer permission to take a step outside of their normal classroom environment.  The qualification is also accredited by the IOL.

Scope:

It is suitable for all who wish to become occupationally competent; need permissions or have an interest in teaching and learning beyond the normal classroom environment.

This qualification is suitable for those employed, volunteering or otherwise involved in Primary schools, Secondary schools, College, Universities, Outdoor Education Centres, Guiding, Scouting, Conservation Education, NGO's, Education Charities, Field Studies.

This qualification is composed of 1 unit.

Delivery

Topics include:

  • Benefits of taking learning beyond the classroom

  • Managing groups and facilitating learning beyond the classroom

  • Planning LBtC activities

  • Understanding risk-benefit assessment process when planning LBtC activities

  • Delivering LBtC activities Linked to defined outcomes 

Features

Typical qualification support includes:

  • Attendance at an event at an approved ITC Centre

  • 10 guided learning hours

  • Assessed by a portfolio of evidence generated by Centre devised assessment tasks

  • Mentor support

  • Successful completion will result in the candidate gaining an ITC level 3 Award in Learning Beyond the Classroom
