ITC First, a leading awarding organisation in outdoor education, today announced the launch of two new qualifications: the ITC Level 3 Award in Bushcraft Competency and the ITC Level 3 Certificate in Bushcraft Competency. These qualifications represent a significant step forward in standardising and recognising skills in bushcraft, offering a robust framework for practitioners and enthusiasts alike.

Developed in collaboration with the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Bushcraft Professional Practice Group (PPG), experienced bushcraft instructors and subject matter experts, these new Level 3 qualifications are designed to provide a comprehensive and rigorous assessment of a learner's practical and theoretical knowledge in various aspects of bushcraft. They address a growing demand for verifiable credentials in the bushcraft community, promoting best practices and safety in wilderness environments.

"We are incredibly proud to introduce these two new qualifications to the bushcraft community," said Mark Moore, ITC CEO.

"For too long, the recognition of bushcraft skills and competency has been largely informal. The ITC Level 3 Award and Certificate in Bushcraft Competency will provide a credible and independently developed standard, not only benefiting individuals seeking to demonstrate their expertise but also enhancing the reputation and professionalism of bushcraft as a whole."

The ITC Level 3 Award in Bushcraft Competency focuses on core bushcraft skills, including:

  • Improvised shelter construction

  • Diverse fire lighting techniques and management

  • Wood carving

  • Water procurement and purification methods

  • Campfire cooking

  • Safe use of cutting tools

  • Making and using cordage

  • Health & safety

Building upon the Award, the ITC Level 3 Certificate in Bushcraft Competency delves deeper into bushcraft, providing a natural progression route. It encompasses all elements of the Award, plus additional modules such as:

  • Fire by friction

  • Navigation without modern navigational aids

  • Tree identification and usage

  • Improvised shelter, using natural resources

Both qualifications are suitable for new entrants into bushcraft, looking to formalise their skills. They will be delivered through approved ITC First centres, ensuring high-quality training and assessment.

These new qualifications are poised to become the standard in bushcraft competency, offering clear pathways for personal development and professional recognition within the outdoor education sector.
